Dear parents,

Thank you for supporting our big day last Friday.  Gday, Day of the Dead Celebration, and the Fall Family Fiesta were all a great success.

We are proud of the students for being so confident while presenting their music and so reflective and thoughtful while sharing their learning with guests in the classroom.

Please remember to help your child practice the high frequency words we sent home last week.  Next Tuesday first graders will take their first formal reading assessment of the year.  This assessment is called DORA and we will show you how it measures reading progress at the fall parent-teacher conferences next month.

New unit of inquiry:

We are now embarking on a new unit of inquiry:  How We Organize Ourselves:  Home Sweet Home.

Here are some details…

Central Idea:

Where we live affects the way we live.

Lines of Inquiry:

  • People build their houses with available resources according to landscapes and climate.
  •  Human beings live in different ways.
  •  Responsible use of resources ensures sustainability.

  • causation, connection, responsibility

Related concepts:

  • natural resources, sustainability, family, culture, climate

Thank you for helping your child choose items to bring to place in different natural regions centers and well as items to share in show-and-tell that are related to the unit of inquiry.

Reminders about Sunday, November 2nd Festival of the Dead Parade:

Starting at 4:30 at the XXXX’s there will be dancing and street theater.

The parade starts at 5:30, all parade participants meeting beforehand and making a line from the XXXX’s.

MIS parade participants will start meeting at 5 to 5:15.

(MIS group- look for the pink and white big-eared bat/bee Alebrije and the giant skeleton puppets!)

Students won’t be officially chaperoned, it is the parents’ responsibility to chaperone children!

Parents are welcome to join the parade!

Everyone please wear makeup/costumes!

The walk down Higgins takes about 20 minutes and ends in Caras Park where there will be African dancers, fire dancers, spinners, jugglers, and drumming.  Please join us for what is sure to be a great time and an amazing parade!!

Have a nice week!
