Purpose of Homework in K/1

Homework in K1 serves two primary functions:

1)  Give students the opportunity to share with their teacher and classmates the research and work they complete at home

2) Give students the opportunity to share at home with their families what they are learning at school

Therefore, we proudly recognize their efforts at home by checking in with the students as they bring their work as well as use their work as provocation for continued learning.

Homework folders

Please help your child develop a habit of bringing his or her homework folder back to school everyday and placing it in the appropriate location the in classroom.

K1 Homework Overview

Reading homework

Students will begin their homework routine when they are ready to read out loud to an adult independently.

Our goal is that students develop the habit and pleasure of reading books in Spanish out loud to an adult family member.

  • We will send the book with an attached signature sheet on Mondays.
  • Each night from Monday to Thursday, children will  read out loud to an adult and collect a signature after completing the task.
  • On Fridays, children will bring their signature sheet with at least 4 signatures for the teachers to check.  They keep all their books at home to create their own collection of Spanish reading material.

To increase interest in reading homework, students are free to choose other Spanish reading books at similar levels to read instead of their assigned book.  They may also read more than once and collect more than one signature per night.   During the weekends, children are encouraged to continue reading their favorite books from their collections.

In addition, we highly encourage parents to read to their children in any language to model a love for books.

Math homework

First graders will have a nightly math assignment (M-Th) which they should be able to complete independently in about 5 to 10 minutes.  Many assignments involve interaction with family members.

Please contact your child’s teacher if your child is unable to complete the homework independently.

Spelling homework

First graders will receive a list of 5 spelling words each week that are mixture of high frequency words and unit vocabulary.  They need to write them several times in the spaces provided.  On Fridays, they will bring them back to school and take a spelling quiz.

Unit of inquiry homework

Family homework assignments for both Kindergarten students and first graders will be given occasionally (1-3 per unit approximately) and will be due the following day unless otherwise indicated.
